Throughout her artistic journey, Florine Imo has always painted female figures. These figures served as the protagonists embodying the narratives and ideas that she had within her during that time. However, a turning point arrived when her work was labelled as “girly paintings“. After that Imo‘s path changed radically. This statement left her wondering about the essence of a “girly painting“, as a female artist. In response Imo created a series of paintings that embodied girlishness. Her aim was to highlight a contrast of sharp and soft attributes in femininity. After painting the „girly painting“ series, the artist wanted to delve deeper into the various facets of femininity. Imo turned to the mythical sirens, enchanting creatures whose mesmerizing beauty concealed a deadly power. As Florine Imo reflects upon the years gone by, recurring themes and scenarios weave a common thread throughout her work. Themes of judgment, power structures, irony and the forces that command our universe encircled her figures. Whether women painted like wild animals in untamed forests or jungles or surrounded by the ocean’s beauty arising from the swamp or figures resistant fire, exhaling radiant light or descending from the sky, powerful forces always encircled them.
