Marie Munk

*1988, Denmark

Marie Munk is an interdisciplinary artist, working with sculpture, installation, video and performance. She is concerned with how technological innovation and productivity both characterize and dominate our environment, our behavior and our bodies. Munk is driven by creating alternative realities that balance the playful, imaginative and adorable with the eerie, disgusting and horrifying. Using silicone as a metaphor for the bodily, Munk creates abstract hypothetical scenarios, which questions current tendencies in society. With an uncanny visual language, she awakes the emotions that arise when we encounter something unknown and immediately abhorrent – awakening the unconscious and irrational in people.

Marie Munk exhibits internationally solo or together with artist Stine Deja. Munk has recently exhibited her largest solo so far – Big Energy – at Gl. Holtegaard.

Munk has exhibited internationally at MU Hybrid Art House, ALBA Gallery, HeK – House of Electronic Arts, Tranen Center for Contemporary Art, PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art, MdbK – Museum der bildende Künste, NCCA Arsenal – National Center of Contemporary Art Arsenal, EXPO Chicago, Galerie Lisa Kandhofer, Mira Digital Art Festival, Museum Villa Rot, and Annka Kultys Gallery, among other institutions and festivals.

Munk is represented by ALBA Gallery in Vienna and her works (Synthetic Seduction in collaboration with Stine Deja) recently became a part of the collection at Arken Museum of Modern Art.

Munk was recently awarded a three-year working grant from the Danish Arts Council. In 2021 she was selected for Bikuben Fondens Atelier Programme TO GO. In May 2020 Munk was awarded Carl Nielsen og Anne Marie Carl-Nielsens Legats Talent Prize. In 2019 she was, together with Stine Deja, shortlisted among the finalists for the Remmen Foundation Art Prize 2019 for their collaborative work. In 2018 Munk and Deja were awarded by the Danish Arts Foundation for their collaborative project Synthetic Seduction at KH7 Artspace.
